O Apenheul foi inaugurado em 1971, e é o único parque no mundo em que os macacos vivem livres, na floresta. Estes também são livres para andar e brincar entre os visitantes do parque. Tal liberdade faz com que o ambiente seja favorável à formação de grupos sociais, e consequentemente há procriação, ou seja, os macacos se reproduzem perfeitamente. O pessoal do Apenheul também trabalha junto a vários grupos internacionais de preservação à natureza. Nós conhecemos um pouco mais o trabalho do grupo “primates helping primates”, que é uma fundação que possibilita às pessoas “adotar-se” um macaco: você paga uma pequena quantia por mês pela adoção e recebe fotos e informações do seu adotado… Marina ficou super interessada em adotar um pequeno orangotango do Borneo. Mas ainda temos um dilema social a resolver: não seria mais correto adotar uma criança? :O)
Apenheul was inaugurated in 1971, and became the only park in the world in which monkeys live freely in the forest. Monkeys can also walk freely among visitors. All that freedom creates a proper environment for the formation of social groups, and as a consequence, procreation is not an issue and the monkeys reproduce frequently. The Apenheul folks also support several initiatives by international groups to protect nature. We got to know a bit more the work of a group called “primates helping primates”. This is a foundation that makes it possible for anyone to adopt a monkey: we just have to pay a small amount of money per month, and we receive photos and information about our adopted monkey… Marina was keen to adopt an orangutan that currently lives in Borneo. But we are still not sure about a social dilemma: wouldn’t it be more correct to adopt a child instead? :O)

“Sumo in Amsterdam tekens de jubileum 400 jaar Japans-Nederlandse handelsbetrekkingen 1609-2009…”
O trabalho de papai patrocinou o evento, e conseguimos 4 entradas para ver um gordão de cada vez, com muitas camadas de banha, tentando jogar o outro grandalhão com outras infinitas camadas de banha fora de um ring, como num tipo de torneio. Fazem 400 anos que as relações comerciais entre Holanda e Japão se estabeleceram. Antes disso, os japoneses faziam negócios preferencialmente com os portugueses, mas o apego religioso daqueles forçou uma mudança de parceiro comercial por parte do Japão… Poderíamos falar muitas coisas do sumo, mas basicamente, é o esporte mais tradicional do Japão, com raízes no Xintoísmo. É uma mistura fascinante de sutileza, estratégia, estilos de luta individuais, e muito muito espírito, clique no YouTube acima e prove um pouco do que vimos no Heineken Music Hall ontem a noite!

Daddy’s company sponsored the event, and we got 4 tickets to watch one big guy at a time, with umpteen folds of flesh, trying to throw another big guy with other several folds of flesh out of a ring, as in a type of tournament. It’s been exactly 400 years that the trading relations between Holland and Japan started. Prior to Holland, the Japanese were keen on trading with the Portuguese folks, but it’s said that the attachment of those to religion influenced the Japanese to switch their preferential partners… We could talk many things about sumo, but it’s basically the most traditional sport of Japan, with its roots in the Shintoism. It’s a fascinating blend of subtle strategies, individual fighting styles, and plenty of spirit, click the YouTube above, and try out a little bit of what we saw at the Heineken Music Hall yesterday evening!

Marina tem se mostrado bastante preocupada com as consequências do aquecimento global para nossa família. Ela tem lido diversos artigos sobre o assunto, o que fez com que ela se tornasse uma grande defensora das práticas para evitar a catástrofe. Então tivemos a idéia de criar uma “news feed” a respeito do aquecimento global, veja abaixo, e nos pareceu que o New York Times é uma das melhores fontes confiáveis no momento. Então siga a feed (feed foi descontinuada no NYT)!
Marina has been deeply concerned about the consequences of global warming to our family. She has read several articles on the topic, what transformed her into an active defender of any practices to avoid the catastrophe. We then had an idea of creating a news feed on global warming, see below, and it seemed the New York Times is one of the good sources found at the moment. So, follow the feed (feed was discontinued in the NYT)!

Foi difícil chegarmos aqui. Levei um tempão procurando uma foto no computador… O objetivo: encontrar uma foto suficientemente profissional para colocar no meu perfil LinkedIn. Começamos com fotos ao ar livre, pensando em dar um ar jovial ao perfil, mas simplesmente não parecia certo… Então tentamos coisas criativas, tipo uma foto dentro de um bar, outra com a Marina no Rio de Janeiro, ou simplesmente uma flor … Até que finalmente conseguimos a foto certa hoje!!! E foi uma foto tirada pelo Gorilla!! No final ainda, fizemos uma sépia para dar um ar de mais seriedade…
It was very difficult to get here. I spent a lot of time looking for photos in my computer… The ultimate goal: find a professional photo to post on my LinkedIn profile. We started outside, thinking to bring a jovial look, but it just didn’t seem right… Next we tried creative things, e.g.: inside a bar, with Mari in Rio de Janeiro, just a beautiful flower … Until we got the right photo today! And it was a photo made by Gorilla!! In the end we transformed the photo into a sepia, to make it look even more professional…
